Thoughts on Motherhood

Martin Luther King Jr., Faith, and Motherhood

Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. inspired and sparked change. He was a man of great words that formed great quotes that were part of great speeches. Today, on this particular MLK Day, the above quote sticks out to me. I can’t help but think how motherhood requires a LOT of faith.

Going in Blind

When I went into the ER and was told I was 35 weeks pregnant and going to be admitted that day in order to deliver a baby I had no clue I was having, faith was one of the only things I had. To ad-lib Martin Luther King Jr., I could not see the whole staircase. I didn’t even know I needed one. I had to build a staircase. My doctor’s had to build a staircase. In short, we had a lot of faith from the day I walked in the hospital until the day I walked out.

Faith never stops.

Motherhood takes a lot of faith. Preparing for motherhood and executing motherhood are two very different things. Every child is unique. Motherhood is an ever evolving and changing journey. We can prepare for mother but we cannot predict. There is no way to predict the next 18 years let alone the next two minutes. Although we can’t see the whole staircase, everyday we take steps. We have faith. We keep faith.

As we show faith in ourselves we reflect faith onto our children. We give our children faith in themselves. They learn to have faith to take their first steps, to say their first words, to grow into successful adults. Our children develop their own faith. They take their own steps on a staircase they too can’t even see.

Motherhood is a never ending journey in and with faith. Martin Luther King Jr., said it best:

Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.
